A. What is GPS? What does GPS stand for?

Global Positioning System, more commonly known as GPS, is a navigation system that enables users to determine their precise location, speed, and time by processing signals from satellites.

This system, which works in any weather conditions and at any place in the world, has become an indispensable tool in various fields such as mapping, surveying, transportation, and emergency response.

The GPS was initially developed in the 1960s by the U.S. Department of Defense for military navigation purposes. A. The Fundamentals of GPS Operation

GPS operation is based on a simple mathematical principle called trilateration. At its core, the system involves a network of 24 satellites orbiting the Earth and continuously transmitting signals. These signals carry information about the satellites' location and the precise time the signal was transmitted.

A GPS receiver (such as the one in your smartphone or car navigation system) receives these signals and calculates how long each one took to arrive. Since the signals travel at the speed of light, the receiver can determine how far away each satellite is based on the time delay between when the signal was sent and when it was received.

B. Trilateration: Determining Your Location

To pinpoint your location, the GPS receiver needs signals from at least four satellites. With the distance to three satellites, it can determine your position in two dimensions (latitude and longitude). The fourth satellite helps to confirm these calculations and provides the third dimension of altitude.

Each satellite's signal provides the data for a sphere centered on that satellite. The radius of each sphere is the distance from the satellite to you. Your position is located where these spheres intersect, thus pinpointing your location on Earth.

Modern GPS receivers are incredibly accurate, often within a few meters. However, accuracy can be affected by factors like atmospheric conditions, signal blockage from buildings or trees, and the quality of the GPS receiver.

Start by opening the Google Maps app on your iPhone. Type the location in the search bar and select it or navigate to the location manually. Tap and hold on the location that isn't already labeled to drop a pin. Once the pin is dropped, swipe up from the bottom of the screen, and you will see the latitude and longitude of the location displayed in the search bar at the top.

Go to Google Maps on your web browser. Enter your location of interest in the search bar and hit enter. Right-click on the location you are interested in. From the dropdown menu that appears, click on "What's here?". A box will appear at the bottom of the screen showing the latitude and longitude of the chosen location.
