The Inherited Instinct: Archaeological Time --- Part 1

For most of human existence, nobody farmed anything. What three hundred thousand years of reading the land left behind.

The soil that took millions of years to make also holds things that took somebody an afternoon.
Mostly it's the ordinary debris of previous occupants — pottery fragments, a horseshoe nail, glass worn smooth. Occasionally something much older. A piece of flint with an edge too regular to be accidental, flaked on one face in a way that catches the light differently than the stone around it.
Someone made that. Chose the material, struck it deliberately, produced a working edge, and then at some point put it down or lost it, and it stayed where it fell for anywhere between four thousand and forty thousand years.
How that ground was built is one story — ice, water, weathering, working across timescales that resist comprehension. What was walking on it while it was being built is another. While the glaciers advanced and withdrew, while meltwater cut channels and moraines were dumped across half a continent, people were living inside the process rather than examining it afterward.
Same ground. Two stories running at once.
The Long Middle
Human history, as most people carry it, is a fairly short story. Agriculture, cities, writing, empires, the industrial period, now. Roughly ten thousand years of increasingly documented activity, with everything before it compressed into a vague prologue.
The proportions are almost exactly backwards.
Anatomically modern humans have existed for somewhere around three hundred thousand years. For more than ninety-five percent of that span, every human alive lived by hunting, gathering, fishing, and moving. No agriculture. No permanent settlement of any scale. No domesticated animals apart from, eventually, the dog.
That is not a prologue. That is the main body of the text, and everything since is the final page.
And it happened almost entirely inside the Pleistocene — the epoch of repeating glacial cycles, advancing and retreating ice, fluctuating sea levels and coastlines that moved by hundreds of kilometers and back again.
Which means the terrain features that read today as geology were, for most of human existence, simply the ground. The moraine ridge was a route. The meltwater channel was a place where water might be. The exposed flint in a chalk outcrop was raw material worth traveling for. People walked across landscapes still being actively shaped by ice, and the shape of that ice determined where they could go, what they could eat, and whether they survived the winter.
Humans did not evolve in a stable world and then encounter climate change. They evolved inside climate change. Instability was the medium, not the disruption.
What Living Inside That World Required
It's easy to picture Paleolithic life as precarious and thin — a bare subsistence, mostly cold, mostly hungry. Some of it certainly was. But the picture that has emerged from decades of archaeological and ethnographic work is of something considerably more sophisticated.
Living well as a hunter-gatherer in a glacial or periglacial landscape required knowledge that is genuinely difficult to overstate. Which plants were edible at which point in their growth cycle, and which were edible only after specific processing. Where water surfaced reliably in dry seasons and where it didn't. How animal populations moved across the year, and what triggered those movements. Which river crossings were passable at which times. Where stone suitable for tools outcropped, sometimes hundreds of kilometers away, and how to get there and back within a seasonal round.
This was not instinct in the biological sense. It was accumulated, transmitted, and constantly updated knowledge — held collectively, carried orally, tested continuously against reality by people whose survival depended on getting it right.
And critically, it was knowledge of a specific place. Not general principles about landscapes, but detailed familiarity with this valley, this ridge, this stretch of river, across a lifetime and across generations. The kind of knowledge that only accumulates through sustained attention to somewhere particular.
That's close to the inverse of how it works now.
A great deal of contemporary land practice involves arriving somewhere with general knowledge and applying it. Principles, techniques, systems that worked elsewhere. The Paleolithic model was closer to the opposite — thin general theory, extraordinarily deep knowledge of one territory, refined across a timespan no individual project could match.
And this isn't only about land. It's close to the default condition of modern life. People move countries, cities, continents. They arrive somewhere new with transferable skills and general competence, and then spend years assembling the specific knowledge that locals absorbed without noticing — where the wind comes from in winter, which market is worth the trip, how the light falls in November, when the rain actually arrives versus when the calendar says it should. The general knowledge gets you functioning. The specific knowledge takes far longer and can't be imported.
For most of human history that gap barely existed, because most people lived and died within the territory their grandparents had known. The knowledge was inherited alongside everything else. Whatever else can be said about that arrangement — and it had obvious costs — it produced a depth of place-familiarity that is now genuinely difficult to acquire.
Reading a Landscape
The most transferable part of that inheritance is probably the reading.
A hunter-gatherer moving through a landscape was continuously interpreting it. Not admiring it, not assessing it for potential development, but reading it for information. What has been here recently. What is likely to be here next month. Which direction water moves after rain. Where snow lingers and where it clears first. What the vegetation says about soil, moisture, and disturbance history.
This is close to what site observation is supposed to be in regenerative design, and it's striking how much of the modern version is a deliberate attempt to reconstruct something that was once simply how people functioned.
The difference is that for most of human history, this reading wasn't a design phase preceding intervention. It was ongoing, permanent, and the primary mode of relating to land at all. There was no meaningful distinction between observing a place and living in it.
That distinction — observation as a separate activity, bracketed off from use — is quite new. It may also be part of what makes it so easy to skip.
The Megafauna Question
One thread in this period complicates any simple story about ecological harmony, and it's worth being honest about.
Across the late Pleistocene, an enormous proportion of the world's large animals disappeared. Mammoths, mastodons, woolly rhinoceros, giant ground sloths, cave bears, and dozens of other large-bodied species vanished across Eurasia, the Americas, and Australia, in a pattern that broadly — though not perfectly — tracks the arrival and expansion of modern humans.
The cause is genuinely contested. One position holds that hunting pressure from expanding human populations was the primary driver. Another emphasises the severe climatic swings of the glacial-interglacial transition, which fragmented habitats and stressed populations already at their limits. The current weight of evidence points toward some combination, with the balance varying by region — climate creating vulnerability, human pressure delivering the final blow in many cases, though the specifics remain actively debated.
What this suggests is that the relationship between humans and the systems they lived in was never simply benign. Even a mobile, low-density, technologically simple population, given enough time, appears capable of permanently reshaping the ecology of continents.
Which makes the inheritance more interesting rather than less. What the Paleolithic offers isn't a model of harmless coexistence. It's a model of deep functional integration with a system — integration that was still capable of producing irreversible change.
The Warming, and the Interruption
Around eighteen thousand years ago the ice began to retreat in earnest.
The changes that followed were substantial and, in places, rapid. Forests advanced into what had been open steppe and tundra. Sea levels rose, drowning coastlines and land bridges. River systems reorganised. Animal populations shifted, and some species that had been central to human subsistence for millennia became scarce or vanished entirely.
Human societies adapted, as they had repeatedly. Toolkits changed — smaller, more specialised, better suited to woodland hunting and intensive plant processing. Fishing and shellfish gathering expanded significantly. In some regions, groups began staying in one place for longer stretches, taking advantage of newly abundant and reliable resources.
In the Levant, the Natufian culture is the clearest example. From roughly fifteen thousand years ago, Natufian communities built substantial stone-founded dwellings, harvested wild cereals intensively, ground grain, and appear to have occupied some sites year-round or nearly so. They were not farmers. But they had begun, in a meaningful sense, to stay.
And then it got cold again.
Around twelve thousand nine hundred years ago, the warming reversed sharply. Temperatures in the North Atlantic region dropped back toward glacial conditions within a span that may have been as short as a few decades. This period — the Younger Dryas — lasted roughly twelve hundred years. Conditions became colder and considerably drier across much of the northern hemisphere. Wild cereal stands in the Levant contracted. The resource base that had supported semi-sedentary life became less reliable.
The archaeological picture from this period is one of retrenchment. Many Natufian settlements were abandoned or reduced. Groups appear to have returned to greater mobility. The trajectory toward staying put, which had been developing for millennia, stalled.
Everything that would follow — agriculture, permanent settlement, the entire architecture of the world most people now inhabit — had begun to become possible, and then the climate withdrew the conditions that made it possible, for twelve centuries.
What carried people through those twelve centuries was what had carried them through the three hundred thousand years before.
Not a technology. Not a stored surplus. A way of operating — the assumption that the land would not hold still, that what worked last decade might not work next decade, that survival depended on reading conditions continuously rather than committing to a fixed arrangement and defending it. Mobility as a default. Diversity of food sources as insurance. Knowledge held in people and transmitted through them rather than embedded in fixed infrastructure. A relationship with place built on attention rather than control.
None of that was chosen deliberately. It was what three hundred millennia of instability selects for. It's the closest thing to an inheritance the Paleolithic left, and it is worth noticing how much of it contemporary regenerative practice is trying, with considerable effort and mixed success, to reconstruct — the patient observation, the redundancy, the suspicion of systems that only work under narrow conditions.
At the close of the Younger Dryas that inheritance was still entirely intact. It had to be. Nothing else worked.
Then it warmed.
